Pyeong chang gang

Yeong wol gun & Pyung chang gun
Almost all species

This river becomes wide enough worth of being called as a river from Jang pyeong crossroads on Yeong dong express way and continues flowing to Pyeong chang as a quite wide river,  meets Jucheon gang and transfers its name as Seo gang there, afterwards meets Dong gang at Yeongwol.

In this river, there are many species and fish, especially famous for Korean traditional fly fishing Pirami and Galkeyoni. This snake river provides many good camping places in each crook. Almost all the shores and banks are good spots for lure and fly fishing. I would call this river a real treasury of lure and fly fishing. It takes aprox. 3 hours by car from Seoul.(PHOTO: Rapids and pools on Pyeong chang gang flowing in front of Inn 'Nosong jang' )

Nwe wun ri :
You will find an yuwonji (resort area) on the way to the seat of Bang rim myeon office passing over Sang bang rim kyo. In this yuwonji, there  is a good fishing spot for Kyeonji fishing. It is  also good for fly fishing.

There is a lane to Nwe wun ri (village) on your left after passing by Bang rim elementary school. In the village, you will find a good camping ground at the skirt of the mountain and the river flows wide and shallow. All kinds of fishings are available and good there. Another good spot is around the ferry at the upper part of the water barrier. It is a good spot for Kyeonji fishing anfd fly fishing.

Downward from the water barrier, there is big rock among the flow called 'Samchi bawi' which makes you notice at a glance, a spot for Sogari. Around the rock, the water is deep and you would lose some lures due to rocky bottom. People talk about lots of big Sogari on that spot but they are scarce today and you could catch, instead, Keokji and Keuri when you cast a little longer.

The road, becoming rougher, blocks you to go downward anymore. To access to the spots at lower section, you should make a detour via Jujin kyo and go upward again along the river.

Dasu ri :
When you arrive at Jujin bo (water barrier) located just upward from Jujin kyo(bridge), you will find a shore covered with gravels quite good for camping as many people do in summer. A clear gravel shore stretches long to lower section of Jujin kyo, too. (PHOTO : View from lower part of the water barrier 'Cheon dong bo' toward upper part) Fly fishing is good around this gravel shore. You will pick up lots of big Pirami.

To explore upper section of the river, pass over Jujin kyo and proceed about 1.5 km to find a bus station at Hupyeong ri and, turn to the right to go up the hill. On the hill, you can see the river again. Pass the tunnel and cross over Dasu kyo to reach Dasu elementary school at the entrance of Dasu ri (village).  Long and deep rapids are found at upper section of Dasu kyo(bridge), where bait, lure, fly fishers could be all happy in fishing  lots of Bulkeoji (big male Pirami in beautiful nuptial color). There is a hump area under the tunnel located downward from Dasu kyo, which is abundant in Keokji. Habitants say it is also a good spot for Megui (far eastern catfish) at night fishing.

Hupyeong ri (village) ~ Jujin kyo (bridge)

It is one of the best spots for lure fishing in the vicinity. The opposite shore of the village is bluffy and many big rocks submerged in the water with rocky bottom are mixed with rapids scatteredly supplying lots of good ambushes to Sogari, Keokji, Keuri, etc.. If you would like to camp for night fishing, go to the wide sandy beach  around Heogong so (pool) located at lower section of Jujin kyo

Yeoman ri :

You will find a water barrier called Yeoman bo when you go down the riverbank after passing over Yeoman kyo(bridge) - not described on the map - that is located before you pass by hyukyeso (restaurant & snack) on the way toward Pyeongchang.

Rapids area is stretched downward from Yeoman bo, but you will be asked to pay entrance fee , in summer. You'd better fish a little more downward and, Keokji, Keuri, Pirami, Galkyeoni are plenty.

Pyeong chang kyo (bridge) :

Around Pyeong chang kyo(bridge), you could probably hook some wild trouts escaped from the trout farm located beside an effluent on the way toward Jeong seon. At upper section of the bridge, there are pools not deep but calm. Meanwhile, at lower section, you will find relatively shallow rapids good for fly fishing and not bad for lure fishing, either. Speciae are also Keuri, Pirami, Galkyeoni, and Trouts !

Jongbu kyo ~ Canaan Farm :

Passing by Pyeong chang Gun office, a long and wide area of riffles is spread  toward Jeongseon. It is called Yaksu yeowul (riffle) famous in the country for Teolbaneul fishing (Korean traditional fly fishing) for Pirami. The depth of the water does not exceed  1 meter even in the center of the river. In summer, you will find lots of  Teolbaneul fishers who are busy to pick up Pirami and Bulkeoji (big male Pirami in beautiful nuptial color) and Jeokgaeri (big male Galkyeoni in nuptial color much beautiful than Bulkeoji) on their particular flies. Fly fishing is very effective, of course, when you apply the variety in flies.

In front of Canaan  farm :

Keokji come up plenty within this area. And Sogari, occasionally. It is also one of the best fishing spots for lure fishing as around Hupyeong kyo, on the river.

Just downward from Cheon dong bo (water barrier) :

Upper section of Cheon dong bo is mostly a fishing center of bait fishers. If you cast lures to the rapids made by water overflowed the barrier, you may hit almost all species of the river. This spot is wonderful to cast flies, too. You will pick up more fish if you approach to the center of the river and cast flies toward the waterfall of the barrier.

Lower section of Dodon kyo :

The area of roks under water is unfolded widely. It is a big haunt of Keokji. You would hit Sogari, too, sometimes.

How to get there :

To drop down the river from upper section, you'd better get out from Jang pyeong I.C. of Yeong dong express way and go toward Pyeong chang.  To go upward from lower section, leave Yeong dong express way at Wonju to change on Joong ang express way and get our of Sin rim. Go further to Pyeongchang via Hwang dun and Jucheon, to reach Dodon Kyo. Leaving from seoul, the second way is shorter.
