Oil spills near the Galapagos Islands

Jessica,  Equadorean 835-tonne tanker run aground in the harbour of San Christobal Island on 16 Jan , 2001, and spilled a million liters of oil into the sea around the Galapagos Islands. Efforts are continuing to re-float the striken tanker and contain the spilled oil but the attempts have been delayed by problems with the towing gear and heavy seas. It is believed most of the 912,000 litres (250,000 gallons) on board have leaked into the sea, and efforts are now concentrating on containing the spreading oil slick. The oil slick is threatening the diverse and often unique flora and fauna of the Galapagos islands.
