Keowun ri, Buk myeon, Yeong wol gun
Galkyeoni, Keokji, Sogari,...

Eorayeon is a small island with sandy bank surrounded by a deep crystal pool made by Dong gang near Keowun ri, Yeong wol. But the road is finished at Keowun ri and you should pay for small ferry to transport you to the island. This is one of the beautiful scenery Dong gang produces. The meaning of Eorayeon is [pond of many fish]. Actually there are still many fish. You can catch some Keokji and many Galkeyoni on several castings of lure or fly fishing. It takes aprox. 4 hours by car from Seoul.(PHOTO: Lure casting on the sandy island of Eorayeon)

Eorayeon :

Eorayeon is a sandy island made in the center of a beautiful river. On the island, sand  and gravels were accumulated long and widely. As you see on the above picture, a big rock of fantastic shape (called 'toad rock') is located in the center of the island and there is an old pine tree rooted on the rock. Surrounded mountains are covered with the deep pine forest and the pool is dark in the shade of the mountains but so clean that you can see all the rocks at the bottom.

When you see toward the upper section, the right of the island is deep pool area meanwhile, the left is shallow stream. You can hook Keokji and Sogari sometimes by the castings to the right pool and to the rapids flowing between the big rocks.

Coming out from the island, you will have chance to cast around the ferry and you will hook there some Keokji, too.

The river passed by Eorayeon island makes the long shallows for about 1 km that even the rafting teams should carry the boats on the shoulder.

After the shallows, there is a torrent where you can fish lots of Galkyeoni on any kinds of fishing. Fishing there on the pool after torrent is really fantastic. The pool is very clean and so many Galkyeoni bite your lures or flies continuously.

After the torrent, you wil find a resort area, where the people dabbing in water is crowded in the summer.

Samok ri :

The lower stretch of Dong gang on the way to Eorayeon runs always with the beautiful mountains surrounded, and the highlight is Samok ri around a big rock (Dungkeul bawi) as you see on the left picture (PHOTO : Dungkeul bawi at Samok ri on the way to Eorayeon)

Dungkeul bawi is said as the good fishing spot of Sogari in Old days but the fish seem to be holocausted long time ago and, as the result, you can not meet any Sogari today. The river has a wide sandbank covered partially with gravels to gather many people for camping and dabbing in water in the summer holiday season.
It is not easy to cast your lure around the big rock because the water flows very fast and you will lose some lures due to the rocky bottoms, moreover. Instead, fly casting toward the big rock will be productive. You will easily hook lots of Keuri, Keokji, Pirami, Galkyeoni. and so on.

Going to upper stretch, you will find a ruined small bridge under which the river flows quite fast. The shade of the front mountain that covers the water surface almost all day makes this place dark and, dreary sometimes when it is a windy afternoon. Passing by that bridge toward the upper spots one day, I sent a fly cast , as a practice, to a point under the bridge. When my mayfly arrived at a small whirlpool, a dark monster appeared from the deep as a thunderbolt bited it fiercely making the exploding water bubbles. And then, my fly rod of weight 3 was almost broken and my reel screamed continuously like a glass knife cuts the glass. Fortunately the space under the bridge seemed not so wide that the monster came up to the surface soon. I found it was a big wild rainbow trout a little larger than 40cm. Such a thrilling memory makes me to drop by this spot whenever I roam about the fishing places in the vicinity.

Going upward a little more, you will find another bridge that is the entrance of a small village and a big shade tree beside the bridge under which the flow a little shallow and the bottom is rocky good for the ambush of Keokji.

Dropping down the river, a little lower from the big rock (Dungkeul bawi), you will find a neat and tidy farm village on the right base of mountain as you see on the picture. (PHOTO : Lower section of Dungkeul bawi and a tidy farm village)

There is a ferry for crossing the river to this village. You can hit some Keokji on lure fishing around the ferry and at a little lower part too.

A few years ago, Samok ri was a secluded village with less than 10

houses and no store, located at an end of a terrible rough road. Even though the supply of food was inconvenient, it was a very fine, tranquil and beautiful fishing place with lots of fish. The aborigin farmers who were lack of men's visits, really liked to meet and talk with the fishers who came to fish there rarely.

Now, the road is paved and the village has been modernized with several super markets, Homestays and other facilities for tourists. All the aborigin seem to have sold their properties and left hometown !  Fish are also gone. I do not like modernization of the river and riverside. The landscape still remains beautiful.

Lower stretch of Dong gang ~ Deoksang kyo(bridge) :

You can continue fishing, dropping down the river from Dungkeul bawi. The bottoms are always rocky . Passing by the village on the mountain, you can reach to Deoksang kyo along the river.  There are not so many fishers to range along this course. It is not so easy to go forward but you will hit lots of Keokji, Keuri, Pirami, etc.. You can make your little adventure of fishing on this course.

At lower section of Deoksang kyo also, the bottoms are rocky and there are lots of good rapids. You are in Yeongwol from there. ...//
