Guman ri power stationGuman ri, Gandong myeon Hwacheon gun
Sogari(mandarin fish), bass, Keuri, Trout, Pirami, Galkyeoni, ...

This river keeps the minimum water level even in the draft season because the spillway water flows from the outlet of Guman ri power station when it generates the electricity several times a day regularly. The hotter temperature of water that comes from the outlet of the power station assembles many species and fish even in the middle of winter. This spot is famous for Sogari and Kyeonji fishing (Korean traditonal fishing method)  for Pirami. There are quite many big wild trouts escaped from trout farms long time ago. Also the population of bass is increasing very fast. Near Guman Bridge, it is the best spot for wading and boating for flyfishers and Kyeonji fishing on the boat. Aprox. 3 1/2 hours' drive from Seoul.(PHOTO :View from the parking area just passing Guma kyo. From the outlet of water to  Guma kyo, the spillway makes good spots for lure, fly and Kyeonji fishers. )

Coming from Hwacheon, go straight about 20 meters passing over Guman kyo(bridge), not crossing it, and you will find a parking space on your right. From the parking area, you can see Guman ri power station (PHOTO) across the river. Park your car there and be completely ready for fishing. It is easy to access to the shore. The best time to fish is when the power station begins generating and discharges water on spillway. But the authorities of power station ask not to approach to the river due to the high current when they discharge. The best time to hit Sogari on lures is around dawn. Hitting the outlet of the power station from the opposite shore by long casting is most productive. Fly fishers do not need to fish early time but they like to wade a bit toward middle of stream to hit the pools in front of the outlet of the power station. This pool is usually crowded with big Keuri, fierce fighters tugging strongly at the end of your line. You can pick up occasionally the wild trouts escaped from the fishery long time ago. Recently bass are coming up well. You would fish more bass if you search for a bit upper and lower section before noon.

Upper and lower section of Guman kyo(bridge) :

It is rocky bottom areas just below Guman kyo. Anglers catch big Sogari often when they search from the more upper section. A bit lower section next to the bridge, there are rapids areas with a bit depth, where the boat Kyeonji fishing is starting . A bit lower section. there are small old ferry and pumping up house and toilette on the shore. The rapids ends there. This is a good spots for fly fishing when the water level drops enough  at off time of power station. Bites of Keuri, Keokji, Pirami and other species are frequent. You would hit wild trouts occasionally. (PHOTO left : View from the parking area in front of the power station towads Guman kyo. Good spots for all kinds of fishing. )

Upper section of Rotten bridge  & Dansan area

In normal times, there a relatively big pools at lower section next to rotten bridge. If you hit this area, you would catch big Sogari or wild trouts unexpectedly. Going up further to upper section upto Dansan watergate, there are small pools, swamps, streams and muddy areas, with occasional deep areas.  These are the spots for bass and big Keokji. The recommended spots are between submerged bridge down to the rotten bridge. In addition, at the rocky bottom area under the left rocky bluffs at upper section which is ocated next to the submerged bridge, you can pick up big Keokji and bass often unexpectedly. The most effective tackle is soft plastic worms with jigheads of 2.8 grams(1/10 onze) or 3.5 grams(1/8 onze) or small spinners on lure fishing rod of 1.8 meters(6 feet) long. Fly fishing will be most effective with the spiders or caddis on #12 hooks at the end of 6X leader line on the rods of # 2~3 weight. You need not long castings but to flip slightly your lures or drag your flies dropped down to shades of submerged rock where bass or Keokji lurk. You can lure them out successfully. (PHOTO right above : View from the underwater barrier towards Guma kyo. The spots are well known as one of the best spots for Kyeonji fishing on boat. But it is also good for fly casting, with rocky bottom area at a little bit lower part.)..//
